Friday 9/18/1903: Cincinnati's Ewing named Best Pitcher Award
Awards may not be the most important thing for Denton Young, but Boston (A)'s right-hander smiled as he was named the American Best Pitcher Award winner. Denton has a record of 32-12 this season, with an ERA of 2.34. In 410.2 Innings he was able to strike out 226 batters. Denton has pitched 7 shutouts and 39 complete games. He's 3rd in the American in ERA and 1st in wins! George Ewing will never forget this year. His dominating season convinced the National to name Cincinnati's right-hander the Best Pitcher Award winner of 1903. Opposing players hit .230 against George this season. While posting an ERA of 2.61 he went 28-12 in 46 starts, fanning 140 and walking 107 hitters. He has 36 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 5th in the National in ERA and 1st in wins!
 
Friday 9/18/1903: Best Hitter Award winners announced
The Best Hitter Award in the American was handed to St Louis (A)'s first baseman John Anderson! He has hit 2 longballs while batting .349 this season. His 192 hits and 41 walks add up to a .394 on-base percentage. He's 3rd in the American in batting and 2nd in RBI! Cincinnati's centerfielder James Seymour had a fabulous season as well, no doubt about it. The National shared this opinion and names the 30 year old the Best Hitter Award winner! This year Seymour drove in 84 and scored 102 runs while batting .399 with 10 taters. He's 1st in the National in batting, 1st in homeruns and 4th in RBI!
 
Friday 9/18/1903: Boston (A)'s Young earns Newcomer of the Year Award
Getting an award is a nice way to start a career. Boston (A)'s Denton Young smiled as he was named the American Newcomer of the Year Award winner. His ERA of 2.34 helped him to a 32-12 record this year. He struck out 226 and walked 62 in 410.2 innings. Denton has pitched 7 shutouts and 39 complete games. He's 3rd in the American in ERA and 1st in wins! The National Newcomer of the Year Award winner was announced today as well, with Cincinnati's pitcher George Ewing earning the trophy for putting up the best numbers among rookies in his league. Wednesday 9/16/1903: Luther Taylor pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
PHILADELPHIA (A) - Philadelphia (A)'s hitters looked uncomfortable, and New York (N)'s Luther Taylor didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 3rd shutout of the season, a 1-hitter. Taylor (22-10) fanned 3 and walked 1, throwing 95 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' New York (N)'s third baseman William Lauder collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Taylor.
 
Monday 9/7/1903: Plank (PHA) and Mathewson (NYN) win P.O.W. award
Philadelphia (A)'s pitcher Edward Plank had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.69 while going 3-0. He pitched two shutouts! His ERA of 2.64 helped him to a 24-19 record this year. He struck out 216 and walked 80 in 406.1 innings. Edward has pitched 3 shutouts and 40 complete games. He's 4th in the American in ERA and 5th in wins! The Player of the Week award in the National goes to New York (N)'s Christopher Mathewson this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.
 
Saturday 9/5/1903: Charles Bender pitches 2-hit shutout against Boston (A)
PHILADELPHIA (A) - Boston (A)'s bats were sleeping, and Philadelphia (A)'s Charles Bender gave them no chance to wake up. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 7th shutout of the season. Bender (25-12) struck out 1 and walked 2, throwing 53 of 95 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Todd Warner helped Bender at the plate, he stroked 3 hits in 3 AB, stroking a double, and driving in 2 runs. Philadelphia (A) scored 7 runs on 11 hits.
 
Friday 9/4/1903: Guy White turns in great performance against Washington
WASHINGTON - Guy White had his best stuff going, and Washington hitters had nothing to cheer about. Chicago (A)'s left-hander pitched a 2-hitter, his 3rd shutout of the season. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' White (23-17) struck out 7 and issued 1 BB, throwing 65 of 101 pitches for strikes. Edward Green provided Chicago (A) with the offense White needed as he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, stroking a double, scoring twice. The final score of the game was 4-0.
 
Wednesday 9/2/1903: 5-hit performance by Cincinnati's James Seymour
BOSTON (N) - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Cincinnati's centerfielder James Seymour after the 10-4 win over Boston (N). A pitch from Wiley Piatt in the 1st inning left his bat for a double. A double off Wiley Piatt in the 7th inning accounted for his 4th hit. A 416 foot drive to left-center marked his 5th hit, a solo homerun off Wiley Piatt in the 8th inning. He had singles in the 3rd inning and in the 5th inning . James scored 2 runs, and he collected one RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .403.
 
Tuesday 9/1/1903: Young (BSA) and Phillippe (PIT) win monthly pitcher award
Boston (A)'s Denton Young had a terrific August, and it earned him the American Pitcher of the month award. He struck out 51 hitters in his 10 starts, putting together a record of 7-2 while pitching 51 innings. His ERA in August was 1.13. In 45 starts this year Denton struck out 218 batters in 393.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.35, his record 31-11. Denton has pitched 6 shutouts and 37 complete games. He's 3rd in the American in ERA and 1st in wins! Charles Phillippe couldn't have pitched much better than he did in August, and the National thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He started 9 games in August, going 6-3 and compiling an ERA of 1.82 in 79 innings. Charles fanned 25 hitters. Charles got two complete game shutouts as well! Charles has a record of 26-16 this season, with an ERA of 2.77. In 387.1 Innings he was able to strike out 156 batters. He has 38 complete games and 8 shutouts. He's 6th in the National in ERA and 2nd in wins!
 
Tuesday 9/1/1903: Anderson (SLA) and Seymour (CIN) win monthly award
The American's best player of the month was St Louis (A)'s John Anderson, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .359 and hit .336, while driving in 20 runs. John has gone 190 for 530 (.358) this season, hitting 2 taters and driving in 78 runs. He has scored 72 runs on his own. He's 3rd in the American in batting and 2nd in RBI! Cincinnati's centerfielder James Seymour had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National Batter of the Month. He hit .452 with 19 RBI and slugged .609 in 115 at bats. Seymour has hit 9 longballs this year while batting .395. He adds 46 doubles, along with 94 runs scored. He's 1st in the National in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 3rd in RBI!
 
Monday 8/31/1903: Cleveland's Rhoads wins Player of the Week award
Cleveland's pitcher Barton Rhoads had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American Player of the Week. Rhoads was overpowering all week long, going 3-0 with an ERA of 2.31. Along the way he struck out 10 in 23.1 innings. A complete game added to his brilliant performance. This season Rhoads compiled an ERA of 3.99, going 19-15 in 36 starts. He fanned 109 while giving up 331 hits in 309 innings. He has 29 complete games and 2 shutouts. The National's best player of the week was New York (N)'s Luther Taylor, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Luther went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50, while fanning 6 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 2.40 helped him to a 22-9 record this year. He struck out 134 and walked 70 in 285.1 innings. Luther has pitched 3 shutouts and 27 complete games. He's 2nd in the National in ERA and 5th in wins!
 
Sunday 8/30/1903: Irvin Wilhelm blanks St. Louis (N) with a 2-hitter
ST. LOUIS (N) - Irvin Wilhelm had an unexpectedly great performance against St. Louis (N) on Sunday, pitching a 2-hitter for his 1st shutout of the season. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Wilhelm (5-8) fanned 3 and walked 3, throwing 106 pitches. The hitting star for Pittsburgh was centerfielder Clarence Beaumont, he went 2 for 4. The final score of the game was 1-0.
 
Thursday 8/27/1903: Earl Moore out for 7 weeks
CLEVELAND - When it rains, it pours. Cleveland's right-hander Earl Moore will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against New York (A) where he left the field in the 6th inning. Cleveland wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Moore had suffered a Bone Chips Shoulder. In 37 starts this year Earl struck out 127 batters in 310.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.42, his record 23-11. Earl has pitched 4 shutouts and 31 complete games. He's 4th in the American in wins!

Tuesday 8/11/1903: George Mullin dominates Philadelphia (A), gives up just 2 hits
DETROIT - Philadelphia (A)'s hitters were dominated by Detroit's George Mullin. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 4th shutout of the season. Mullin (17-15) struck out 5 and walked 3, throwing 64 of 107 pitches for strikes. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Detroit's catcher James McGuire got 1 hit in 2 AB, homering once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Mullin. Detroit improved its record to 52-62, scoring 2 runs on 4 hits.

BOSTON (A) - Great days are rare. But not for Boston (A)'s right-hander Denton Young. Detroit found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Joseph Yeager singled with no outs in the 6th inning. Young (26-10) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 4. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Harry Gleason helped Young at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, with 2 RBI. Boston (A) scored 6 runs on 10 hits.
 
Friday 8/7/1903: Carl Lundgren turns in great performance against Brooklyn
CHICAGO (N) - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Carl Lundgren did so today, in a 1-hit shutout against Brooklyn. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Lundgren (18-11) struck out 3 and issued 2 BB, throwing 58 of 101 pitches for strikes. Frank Chance provided Chicago (N) with the offense Lundgren needed as he finished with 3 hits in 4 AB. Chicago (N) improved its record to 60-51, scoring 5 runs on 10 hits.
 
Wednesday 8/5/1903: Huge blow for Boston (N)'s Willis, career over
BOSTON (N) - It was one of baseball saddest days. Boston (N)'s right-hander Victor Willis fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Pittsburgh on Wednesday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Fred Clarke, then suddenly collapsed. After being taken to a local hospital, Willis was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Shoulder. This season Willis compiled an ERA of 2.90, going 14-16 in 37 starts. He fanned 142 while giving up 295 hits in 313.1 innings. His career featured a record of 14-16 with an ERA of 2.90. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
 
Monday 8/3/1903: Philadelphia (A)'s Waddell wins Player of the Week award
Philadelphia (A)'s pitcher George Waddell had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 2.33 while going 3-0. Frank Hahn of Cincinnati wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating National's hitters the entire week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. Saturday 8/1/1903: Cleveland's Lajoie severely injured
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's second baseman Napoleon Lajoie hurt himself in the 1st inning while making a routine throw to first base. He experienced serious pain and had to leave the game. Napoleon Lajoie will miss at least 5 weeks. Lajoie was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. Lajoie has hit 5 homeruns this year while batting .362. He adds 21 doubles, along with 53 runs scored. He's 4th in the American in batting, 5th in homeruns and 6th in RBI!
 
Saturday 8/1/1903: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Philadelphia (A)'s George Waddell had a terrific July, and it earned him the American Pitcher of the month award. He had an ERA of just 2.22 in 89 innings of work in which he struck out 38 hitters. His record in July is 9-1. George fired two shutouts! In 35 starts this year George struck out 141 batters in 301.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.93, his record 23-9. He has 30 complete games and 5 shutouts. He's 6th in the American in ERA and 2nd in wins! The best month of July in the National certainly had New York (N)'s right-hander Luther Taylor, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His record of 7-0 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 62 innings of work he allowed just 50 hits while striking out 32, compiling an ERA of just 1.02. Opposing players hit .234 against Luther this season. While posting an ERA of 2.61 he went 18-7 in 26 starts, fanning 108 and walking 50 hitters. Luther has pitched one shutout and 21 complete games. He's 4th in the National in ERA and 4th in wins!
 
Saturday 8/1/1903: Pittsburgh's Ritchey named Batter of the Month
The American Batter of the Month award goes to Patrick Dougherty, Boston (A)'s starting centerfielder. Patrick pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .394 with 0 and 27 RBI while slugging .477. Dougherty has hit for a .374 average this season. He has 22 extra base hits along with 187 total bases, resulting in a .432 slugging percentage. He's 2nd in the American in batting and 4th in RBI! Pittsburgh's second baseman Claude Ritchey had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National Batter of the Month. He had an on base percentage of .432 and hit .371, while driving in 18 runs. This year Ritchey drove in 61 and scored 28 runs while batting .316 with no homeruns. He's 9th in the National in batting and 9th in RBI!

ST. LOUIS (N) - Mordecai Brown had some fun again. Brooklyn hitters did not. St. Louis (N)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 3 career shutouts in 28 games started. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Brown (12-13) struck out 6 and walked 2, throwing 60 of 108 pitches for strikes. John Dunleavy helped Brown at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate. St. Louis (N) scored 2 runs on 7 hits.
 
Saturday 7/25/1903: Andrew Coakley quiets Chicago (A) bats with shutout
PHILADELPHIA (A) - Andrew Coakley had an unexpectedly great performance against Chicago (A) on Saturday, pitching a 2-hitter for his 1st shutout of the season. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Coakley (4-4) fanned 3 and walked 4, throwing 113 pitches. Philadelphia (A)'s centerfielder Daniel Hoffman got 4 hits in 5 AB, hitting 2 doubles, scoring three runs and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Coakley. It's the 2nd time that the American Player of the Week award goes to Philadelphia (A)'s pitcher Charles Bender. Bender was overpowering all week long, going 3-0 with an ERA of 1.67. DETROIT - Detroit's right-hander William Donovan experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 7th inning of the game against Washington, Donovan complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Disc Back which will require surgery. His ERA of 2.80 helped him to a 4-5 record this year. He struck out 48 and walked 23 in 86.2 innings. He has 9 complete games and 2 shutouts.
